As most of you know, my daughter Katelyn has had her baby. Peyton Douglas Bishop Mills was born on June 5th at 6:48pm. He weighed in at 4.08 lbs and he is 16 inches long.
Peyton was born two months premature, at Huntsville hospital and then transferred to Birmingham after the doctors discovered that he has a rare congenital heart defect known as hypoplastic left heart syndrome. This means that the left side of his heart cannot supply blood to the rest of his body because the lower left chamber, known as the left ventricle, does not exist.
With this, our little Peyton will have to have three heart by-pass surgeries within the first 12 months of his life. His first surgery is most complex and will take place as soon as he is strong enough and his brain is mature enough. Since he was premature, we are not exactly sure when this will be. Right now the surgery is scheduled for Monday, June 25th.
With brain damage and bleeding being a complication from the surgery, the doctors are monitoring him closely and have rescheduled this surgery three times because they felt that Peyton was not physically strong enough and his brain was not mature enough.
Peyton has his Mommy and Daddy with him in Birmingham and they will continue to stay with him over the next 15 months. I will do my best to keep everyone posted with updates on Peyton as things progress. Please keep him and our family in your prayers.
